AltMFA is an alternative ‘Master of Fine Art’ course established by
artists for artists as a free alternative to studying a university-based
MA in London. The course has no fixed premises; our programme takes
place in a range of private and public venues.
Alt MFA incorporates the most desirable elements of an MFA course; space to work, collaborators to argue with, a social sphere to move within. Unlike a conventional MFA, Alt MFA is a common space in which there are no fees; time and facilities are all offered in kind.
Alt MFA is self-selecting; the only criteria for membership is attendance and the contribution of time and energy. Alt MFA is non-hierarchical and self-directed; participants set the curriculum.

AltMFA used to hold regular meetings are every Monday night between 6.30pm and 9.30pm.
Since the covid pandemic, AltMFA has become more of a network using whatsapp to organise meet-ups and events. Get in touch by emailing altmfalondon@gmail.com if you would like to know more.
AltMFA was started in 2010 by Louise Ashcroft and Lucie Garland.
